Park Bench Musing: Can you love someone whom you’ve never met?

The sun was blazing away over the crimson-lit sky, sending scattered reflections over the bay while the gentle breeze caressed my skin. It was fine weather for a jog, yet I don’t feel like it.

Instead, I observed a yellow sunbird fluttering from flower to flower as I occasionally lost in thought on the enamel coated park bench.

So I met this girl online and she scored well under my assessment radar: Decent job, similar interests and she lives in the next town.

While it does feel nice knowing that someone out there has a favorable impression on you, the feel-good chemicals wane off and you begin to ask yourself,

“Is it possible to love someone whom you have never met?”

There is a Malay proverb that says “Tak kenal, maka tak cinta”,

Which means: If you don’t know something, you can’t fall in love with it.

Love is a verb, based on actions not feelings. It has to be a product of mutual effort and sincerity.

It takes a vested interest on your part to understand. Love without understanding might probably be lust.
