I actually love to purge
In the present world of hyper-consumerism, we are being brainwashed by advertisements to get our hands on the latest gadgets, the latest fad, upcoming movie etc. While this is good for the economy, I felt that we are pursuing too much on the materialistic lifestyle, which distracts us from living the life we want.
It’s the time of the year again. People are celebrating Christmas right now, tearing up presents and giving away stuff yet here I am sorting through my room — piled with junk.
I for one, find joy in removing things which no longer serve my lifestyle.
We may have come a long way from our primal hunter-gatherer ways of foraging berries and hunting for meat, but our times have changed. We accumulate things for our convenience. The fact that we strive to surround ourselves with things suggest that we are wired to pursue pleasure and thus, finding ourselves in agreement with the hedonistic lifestyle.
Wastefulness?
Reducing one’s possessions might be a wasteful act for some. And that is totally fine with me. My mom is a classic example of someone who prefers abundance and disapproves on my wanton purges, especially if some of the stuff has ‘a few good years left’ to its life.
