The time was 7.30 am.
It has been a while since I arrived this early for work. The road was choked-full with vehicles, making it a stressful commute that serves as a reminder of how fortunate I was to own a bike and being able to weave into the traffic.
Today, we head over to a nearby nursing home to do our part for the community by giving free haircuts.
Among the 20 elderly who signed up, one particular old man strikes me a certain way that makes me ponder about life in the golden years.
The Old Sailor
“Mr. Khoo,” he responded as I attempt to make conversations with the old chap in a mix of Bahasa and Chinese. Most of those who belongs in the pioneer generation can understand and speak the national language.
“So, you makan (eaten) already?”
He gave a nod and responded enthusiastically, despite failing to recall what breakfast he had just now. The topic naturally took a slide onto a chapter of his life.
Food, hobbies, and entertainment. The usual hors d’oeuvres to start the conversation.
