Get Better By Helping Others
Bringing out the best in others is one of the many ways that we can discover ourselves.
I recall a time when I was a military draftee, (National Service) going the extra mile to assist my peers during our training.
My throat was dry and my skin was parched. Beads of sweat condense on my forehead as we take a pause in the mosquito-riddled Borneo jungle.
Regardless, I offered my water canteen to them even when I am at the point of thirst.
Somehow, the thirst felt bearable when I took comfort knowing that my platoonmates are cared for.
Surprisingly, this realization gave me the strength to endure the exercise until we completed the mission.
When we care for others, we take the pressure off us and unknowingly, learn to improve our qualities as an individual.
The social currency
We are creatures that rely on one another for our survival.
When we help others, people, in turn, are willing to reciprocate.
Like it or not, carrying favors and asking for one forms part of this social fabric of our community. When we help others, we rack up favor points in times of need.
