Biking is a way of life

In Singapore, the locals classify two different kinds of vehicles on the road — The metal surrounding you or you surround the metal, the bikers.

Motorcycles produce a smaller carbon emission as opposed to the other classes of transport and technically takes a fraction of the real estate on parking and on road. There are some discrimination on the road — and cyclists but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying my ride.

From the moment you start the engine and twist the throttle, any worries or thoughts simply vanish. You are carefree as you hit the road and gunned down the expressway. You essentially become one with the bike.

The adrenaline rush improves your alertness and your quick thinking. I usually adopt the mindset that any cars or trucks are out to get me. There is this invisible buffer of protection that I always try to maintain from all sides.

I have learnt to navigate by not relying on my smart phone which will distract me while on the road. You develop a keen sense of situational awareness and and direction.

There is a distinction between boldness and recklessness, which unfortunately not many people can tell the difference when it comes to motorcyclists. After 2 minor accidents on the road resulting in multiple bone fractures, I know how vulnerable motorcycling is. Yet, taking the courage to ride again is another valuable life lesson in itself.

Your bike wherever you go. Helmet hair is not a good enough reason to deter me from biking. You quickly learn to accept that the elements are part and parcel of biking. Rain or shine doesn’t faze you as you mentally prime yourself for that journey.

Happiness is a way of travel, not the destination.
